Brief Overview
Sodium cyclamate is an artificial sweetener that is 30-50 times sweeter than table sugar and has no nutritional value. In other words, it has zero calories. Sodium cyclamate is often used with other sweeteners, like saccharin. Sodium cyclamate is cheaper than most sweeteners, such as sucralose.
Manufacturing Process
Sodium cyclamate was synthesized by the sulfonation of cyclohexylamine with chlorosulfonic acid in chloroform to produce cyclohexylammonium N-cyclohexylsulfamate, which was then treated with sodium hydroxide. Sodium cyclamate has also been made by the reaction of nitrocyclohexane with sodium dithionite in an aqueous solution in the presence of trisodium phosphate.
Food Industry
Sodium cyclamate is used as a blend of soft drinks, flavored water, soda, pickles, canned food, biscuits, confectionery, etc. Sodium cyclamate is used for food additives in spices, extracts, colorings, flavors, etc. Sodium cyclamate is also used in food designed for diabetics and dieters.
